The Driskill Hotel

The Driskill Hotel, completed in 1886, is the oldest operating hotel in Austin and one of the oldest in Texas. Conceived and built by Colonel Jesse Driskill, a cattleman who spent his fortune constructing “the finest hotel south of St. Louis” at a cost of $400,000 (that was a lot of money back then).

It has had a long and rocky history, but today the Driskill remains one of the premier hotels in Texas. What you might not know is it is also known as one of the most haunted hotels in the United States, featuring a variety of alleged supernatural activity throughout the building including the spirit of Colonel Driskill himself.

Be sure to check out the other shots of the grand hotel from last year.

The Driskill Ford

Though I enjoy cars as much as the next guy, I’m not great at distinguishing very old models, much less remembering them once I find out. You see them so rarely, it’s hard to keep them straight.

If you are ever in Austin, Texas, be sure to visit the Driskill Hotel. Opened in 1886, it’s the showplace of cattle baron Jesse Driskill and is a landmark of Texas hospitality. Out front you will find this old Ford parked on the street. I thought it fitting to give it the old photo look, though the car is actually in great shape.

Driskill Hotel Check-in

I had just finished my first photo walk. What an experience. It was the Trey Ratcliff Photo Walk in downtown Austin, TX during the SXSW 2011 Conference. We had just returned to the lobby of the historic Driskill Hotel and I was waiting with some other folks to meet Trey and hopefully get a photo with him. Since the tripod was still open, I shot this while waiting in line.

As it turns out, it received an Honorable Mention in their contest from photos entered from everyone that attended. And I still got my photo with Trey too!

Rooftop on Sixth Street

Many cities have an area or street that is know for its night life and entertainment. Whether it’s live music, dance clubs or sports bars, it’s the place where the “in” crowd go on most any night of the week. When in Austin, TX, that place is the seven blocks of Sixth Street between Congress and IH 35.

With historical houses and commercial buildings dating as far back as the late 1800′s, they now house numerous bars, a variety of live entertainment venues, tattoo parlors, art galleries, cafes and upscale restaurants. One of the “must see” places is the elegant Driskill Hotel. Live music of every genre abounds with something for everyone’s musical taste. If dinner is your destination, you can find most any type of area specialties, such as Tex-Mex, ribs, chili and ribs, or steak, seafood, cajun-cooking, and even deli.

Don’t spend the night in Austin, without a trip to Sixth Street.

Look Up

This is one of the first HDR images I ever processed. It was shot back in the spring of 2011, just after my very first photo walk. It’s the ceiling light fixture in the Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas. It was just above where I took this other shot of the check-in desk. It’s a wonderful historic hotel in downtown Austin. You would be lucky to stay there if you ever have the chance.

Photo walks are a great way to get out and look for images, things that would normally pass you by, but deserve a closer, longer look.
